Chris Loder, MP for West Dorset, has progressed his campaign to ban live animal exports with the bill completing its passage through the House of Commons. The Animal Welfare (Livestock Exports) has passed all remaining stages in the House of Commons. The legislation will put an end to the export of live animals for slaughter and fattening from Great Britain, ending unnecessary stress, exhaustion, and injury on long journeys, including the export of live sheep and cows from Folkestone.
Former DEFRA Secretary, Dr Therese Coffey, commended Mr Loder’s dedication to the cause since his election in 2019, the MP for West Dorset has passionately campaigned for a permanent ban to prevent any future exports on top of his successful Private Members Bill which increased the maximum sentence for cruelty to animals from 6 months to 5 years.
In 2020, Mr Loder urged fellow Members to ensure the practice was banned. He said: “I’ve long campaigned for the Animal Welfare (Live Exports) Bill to be introduced, and I will not stop until this Bill has passed successfully through the House of Lords to make sure this practice is outlawed.”
