Second homes in West Dorset will be subject to a 100% Council Tax premium from 1st April 2025, following Chris Loder MP’s sustained campaign. The introduction of a Second Homes tax is only permissible because of the Levelling Up and Regeneration Act – which Mr Loder voted in favour of at every stage of its parliamentary passage. Mr Loder said:3
“A Second Homes tax will be introduced in West Dorset next year. In addition, from 1st April this year, properties classified as long-term empty and unoccupied will pay a 100% tax premium. This is a big campaign success; Dorset Council will use 40% of the additional monies raised to support the delivery of affordable housing.”
“This is great news for those wanting to get onto the property ladder, as it will make our housing distribution fairer and it rectifies the unfairness that allows second homeowners to avoid paying tax. It’s only because of the Levelling Up Act - which I always voted in favour for - that these now taxation policies have been implemented.”
