West Dorset’s MP, Chris Loder, has said that a proposed ban on teaching gender identity in schools ‘will safeguard children’. It follows the local MP’s recent campaign to protect children in Dorset’s schools from being taught inappropriate gender identity material. The proposed ban is subject to a consultation, along with other measures including prioritising transparency with parents and not teaching sex education to pupils before Year 5.
Mr Loder said: “I fully support the proposed ban on teaching gender identity in schools, as part of the Department for Education’s review of RHSE statutory guidance. In recent months I’ve uncovered a deeply concerning situation in Dorset’s schools with charities targeting young children with gender identity material. It’s sickening and must be stopped.”
He continued: “This review will ensure that concepts are not introduced before children are old enough to understand them, and that lessons do not prompt them to explore things they are not ready for. It also grants parents greater autonomy to understand exactly what their children are being taught in schools. I’d urge parents in West Dorset to complete the consultation.”
The review of the RHSE statutory guidance closes on the 11th July. People and organisations can submit their views to the consultation here: https://consult.education.gov.uk/rshe-team/review-of-the-rshe-statutory-guidance/consultation/intro/
